IRS Changes to 1096 and 1099 Tax Forms

The IRS has changed the format of the 1096 and 1099 forms for 2013 filings. These changes, which resize some of the boxes, require a change in the positioning of the text that is printed on the forms by the TOPS program.

Our developers have updated the TOPS program to accommodate the updated format, and we are currently testing these changes. We will be releasing the updated files later this week. The files will be released through the new TOPS Launcher program for all customers on an active maintenance support agreement.

As a result of these form changes, only supported versions of TOPS will be able to print data correctly in compliance with the revised IRS form 1099/1096 formats. If you are using an older version of TOPS, you WILL NOT be able to print 1099/1096 forms in an IRS compatible format.

We know that you have a legal obligations to get these files to your contractors and vendors by January 31st for 1099's and by February 28th for 1096's. We are working to get you the updated files as quickly as possible, but if the above solution is not soon enough, or you are not on support, you can still generate the old forms in TOPS, and simply hand-fill in the forms using the data generated by the program - the IRS does accept hand-written forms.
