Updating the Internet Updater

With this month’s update, we have made several enhancements to the TOPS Internet Updater and “Update Workstation from Server” functions. Due to the nature of these program updates, each workstation will need to be updated individually.
This means going to Internet > Check For Updates Online or by visiting http://www.topssoft.com/downloads.htm and running the Internet Updater from there.

The TOPS Internet Updater should be run one time on every server and every workstation to insure that all users retrieve the new programs. Please follow these ONE-TIME instructions on every server and workstation, starting with the Primary Data Server:

1. Disconnect all users from TOPS on the server, and close TOPS on the machine you are updating.
2. Open an Internet browser, and navigate to http://www.topssoft.com/downloads.htm.
3. Scroll down on the page to the section titled Program Updates, and click on the Go button.
4. When prompted to run or save the file, click RUN. (if you are prompted a second time, click Run again.)
5. When the Internet Updater appears, click on the down arrow next to "Module to Check" and select the appropriate module, such as “TOPS v321”.
6. Click Update Now to perform the update.
7. Repeat these procedures on each workstation.

A few things to consider if the Module to Check shows you “FreeUpdates”:

• You do not currently have an active support plan.
• Your license information may need to be updated.

To check your license, go to Internet > Internet Control Center. Verify that your “Customer ID” matches your Client ID. The Zip Code entered should also match what we have on file for you. Click on Retrieve Key and your license information will be updated.

Also note that we post program update information here http://www.topssoft.com/Articles/Updates/index.htm - just click on the appropriate link. This is the quickest way to find out what has been updated.

Finally, we recommend that you schedule the Internet Updater through the TOPS Scheduler to run on your server at the beginning of each month. Except for the rare program updates this month, all you need to do is update your server. As each workstation opens TOPS, they will be prompted to update from the server. In order for the program updates to be installed, you should click Yes on those workstations.
